Throughout centuries the port has formed the basis for prosperity and well-being of Liepaja. The port has developed mostly due to the advantageous geographical location of Liepaja – as Liepaja is the port closest to Scandinavia and Western Europe, it provides effective access to the markets of the Baltic Sea region and CIS countries, thus rapidly becoming one of centres for transit and logistics in the Baltic Sea region.

Liepaja Port is part of Liepaja Special Economic Zone, thus it has the status of free port allowing to successfully compete with other ports of the region.

During the last decade the port has transformed from a closed military base into a modern commercial port. Port companies offer high quality of work, attractive labour costs and services based on effective state-of-the-art cargo processing technologies.

Liepaja port has been developing throughout the last decade and it plays significant role in the development of the cit itself.

Uldis Sesks, Mayor of Liepaja comments: The key to success of Liepaja Port is the fact, that we could continue operation in winter, when great part of the Baltic Sea was frozen. It led to an unexpectedly high increase of cargo turnover already in the first three months. The second key to success is versatility of port. Liepaja Port does not depend on the flow of one kind of cargo – if one of the cargo types has a decrease in turnover, it can be compensated by others. It provides greater guarantee for stable work of the port and the city, as well as greater security for jobs of Liepaja people.
