SOCIAL SERVICES

In 2003 the social budget of Liepaja was 2 million Ls or 14 % from the total city budget. Liepāja City Council provides poor families with the following benefits: housing benefit (5296 households), social benefit (1700 households), various extraordinary allowances (17 000 people), assistance at home, social rooms for short term accommodation. 

Additional social assistance: installing water meters (3000 meters, 76000 Ls), social home on Flotes street (152 places, 49 128 Ls), senior social home on Ganību street (146 places, 36191 Ls), social flats (400 000 Ls), shelter for homeless (120 places, 52892 Ls), children’s shelter (41 498 Ls), Šulci family orphanage (7 979 Ls), drug addiction fighting point (18 963 Ls), Orphanage (244 407 Ls), youth rehabilitation centre (28 018 Ls), transport discounts for poor and elderly (123 757 Ls). 

 

SOCIAL SERVICE CENTRE

Social Service Centre is a municipal institution, which provides social assistance and social services. Centre also carries out professional social work with adults and families with children living on the territory of Liepaja municipality, which have problems in their lives that they are not able to tackle themselves, but have the wish to change the situation they are in. There are various forms of assistance:

  • Directing the client towards self-assistance, involving him/her in the solving of his/her own problems
  • Providing information about possibilities to improve the client’s situation
  • Organising the actions of client, involving him/her in using his/her own resources for improvement of social situation
  • Determine necessity for national and municipal social assistance and services.

Main tasks:

  • to provide the client with information on the current laws and other normative acts regulating social sphere
  • to organise provision of social assistance and social services for clients and client groups
  • to investigate the living conditions and material situation of client
  • to co-operate with respective municipal, state organisations and NGOs providing social services.
