In order to increase the influence of Liepaja in the politics, economy and culture of Latvia, the City of Liepaja reestablished its Representative Office in Riga on November 12, 1998.
The main task of its staff is to participate in the development of those bills and resolusions of Saeima and the national government, which will have an impact on Liepaja and its region. The Representative Office helps to improve not only the awareness in Liepaja about the plans and decisions of the natioal government, but also the awareness in the national authorities about Liepaja. It coordinates the cooperation between Liepaja and Riga within the business, public and municipal affairs and may provide the general and specified information on Liepaja to anyone interested.
Liepaja Representative Office in Riga offers information about Liepaja and its:

Exhibitions of Arts
For several years Liepaja Representative Office in Riga organizes also the exhibitions of Liepaja artists with the purpose to promote art and culture activities of Liepaja. The cooperation with artists started at the end of 1998 with the exhibition of paintings by Benita Bitāne, arranged with the assistance Raimonds Gabaliņš, Head of Liepaja League of Painters. Now it is a regular tradition to host various exhibitions of Liepaja artists.
Co-operation partners
The meetings with the representatives of embassies, politicans and state officials take place in Liepaja Representative Office in Riga on the regular basic, as well as monthly meetings of the students, press conferences and other activities arranged. Our cooperation partners are also Departments of Liepaja City Council, Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority and Lejaskurzemes Tourism Information Office. Only through cooperation with them we can facilitate the development and promotion of Liepaja!
History
In 1922 Liepaja City Broad took a decision to delegate Nikolajs Sudmals, member of Liepaja stock exchange committiee, as "the representative of the city in the Capital". Stock exchsnge committiee could be compared to the present Chamber of Commerce and industry together with Port Authority and Special Economic Zone Authority.
During his time in the office Nikolajs Sudmals, former first lieutenent of Russian Army, pilot and the participant of WW I, arranged several commercial exhibitions in Riga Trade Guild as well as the "shows" of Liepaja industrial production. In 1925-1926 he participated in the exhibition of production of Liepaja Karosta manufacturers in Riga.
Liepaja City Representative Office in Riga was an official institution in Riga; it was located on Stabu street 2 (near present Kr.Valdemara street). The same building - apartments Nr.4 - was also the residence for Nikolajs Sudmals. He owned a cafe in the centre of the Riga named "Mona".
Liepaja City Representative Office in Riga operated till 1934. It facilitated the adoption of Law "On Liepaja Free Harbor" by Saeima in 1927-1929 and lobbied other issues important for Liepaja. Nikolajs Sudmals was seeking to get lobbies among the deputes of Saeima so in favor to Liepaja would take the decission on establishing Army Economical Shop.
After the coup of Kārlis Ulmanis on May 15, 1934 and the appointment of Evalds Rimbenieks as a Mayor of Liepaja City, there was no more need for the city representative office as a loobying instrument because Evalds Rimbenieks wa minister of finances.
