2. Valters Library
Valters Library was founded in 1967 and is currently the only cultural institution in the Northern Suburbs residential neighbourhood of Liepāja “ZIemeļu priekšpilsēta”. The library received its current name in 2003 in honour of Miķelis Valters, a prominent Liepāja resident, politician and poet. In order to preserve and promote the memory of this great local man, a permanent tribute exhibition has been created in the library.
Children and teenagers are a major focus of the library, providing them interesting events and activities, while at the same time encouraging kids to spend their free time in a useful way and to learn new skills and talents.
The library regularly organises information and education sessions for young people from the Day-care Centre for young people with mental disabilities.
The library also frequently hosts exhibitions of creative works - most of the authors are non-professional and amateur artists - residents of the local neighbourhood and library readers.
The library has a Young Readers' Book Club, where children share their impressions of the latest Latvian and foreign general fiction and fine literature.
