Liepaja artists’ works on show in Klaipeda2nd October, 2022Culture

    1 from 1

The works of six Liepaja artists are on view at the Klaipeda Culture Communication Centre (KKKC) (Didžioji Vandens Street 2, Klaipeda) until 9 October.

“Mindful Explorations” is a multidisciplinary art exhibition featuring practice-based artistic research. The works explore people’s perceptions and senses, relationships with the environment and promotes how to exist in today’s technology-oversaturated world. Artists use a variety of techniques and media in their works and research: sound, image and video, as well as artificial intelligence tools, virtual and augmented reality, they create new prototypes of technology, and experimentation with natural and industrial phenomena.

Artists of the exhibition are Maija Demitere, Paula Vītola, Krista Dintere, Marta Gūtmane, Anna Priedola and Gustavs Lociks, the curator is Paula Vītola.

Marta Gūtmane has created a visualisation of port pollution in a virtual environment. The work was created by hanging up fabrics in the vicinity of the Port of Liepaja and taking images over several months, using these images as a basis for data visualisation.

Sound artist Krista Dintere explores the surface of Lake Liepaja, a place where nature and culture meet. The sound composition tells the story from a different perspective – those who live beneath the surface of the lake and listen to the world above them.

Anna Priedola’s work explores inter-species relationships, food storage, zero-waste materials and other sustainable practices. The artist has created a book, which instead of a recipe offers a sensory experience: the pages made of food must be read using a variety of sensory organs; it is possible to feel, touch and even taste the pages.

Maija Demitere explores sustainable solutions for food production. The work offers insights into the artist’s gardening practices and the exhibition features a variety of prototype systems for food production at home.

Paula Vītola presents her research into creating sound with light, which was inspired by Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the photophone, or solar-powered telephone, more than 150 years ago.

In his work, Gustavs Lociks invites visitors to think about the role of real and fictitious of today, where a computer went from a relatively simple machine for transcoding zeros and ones to becoming a being capable of perceiving the world and synthesising new realities.

As part of the exhibition, the association also offers the works of the ART+ Digital Gallery in Klaipeda. ART+ is an augmented reality app where 3D and sound artworks can be viewed on Android and iOS devices in Liepāja, Kuldīga, as well as temporarily in Klaipeda. ART+ is also available on a web browser for those who are unable to visit the designated locations or do not have access to a suitable device to use the app. Links to the app, more information and artwork on the web browser available at https://artplus.app/.

The exhibition is organized by the association ASTE and Liepaja University Art Research Laboratory (MPLab) in cooperation with the Klaipeda Culture Communication Centre (KKKC).

The exhibition is supported by the municipality of Liepāja, Liepāja City Culture Department, Kurzeme Planning Region, VKKF and Liepāja University. The ART+ objects are being created in 2022 within the framework of the EIT Community New European Bauhaus project “Growing Food in Liepāja”, and it is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
