In order to promote Latvia’s bilateral relations with foreign countries, to popularise investment attraction, economic cooperation and tourism opportunities in the regions, and to display our country’s diverse cultural and historical heritage, on Wednesday, 28 September, more than 30 heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Latvia travelled on an annual regional trip to Kurzeme and also visited state city of Liepaja.

Andris Pelšs, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, invited the Ambassadors to explore the cities of Saldus, Liepāja, Jūrmala, Alsunga and Ēdole in Kurzeme.

The delegation in Liepaja was hosted by the City Council’s leadership together with representatives of the concert hall “Great Amber”, the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, the European Capital of Culture 2027 and 17th-19th century interior museum “Madame Hoyer’s Guest House” representatives.

“To host such a large number of heads of embassies and diplomatic missions from all over the world in Liepaja is not only a great honour, but also a great opportunity for residents of Liepaja to show themselves as a strong economic, political and cultural centre of the region. The diverse programme we offered to our guests from diplomatic missions allowed us to display what has already been achieved in the city, but also to highlight the future potential and strengths of our city. In particular, we highlighted Liepaja as the European Capital of Culture 2027, because it is clear that close international ties will be a very useful resource for the implementation of the Capital of Culture programme,” said Gunārs Ansiņš, Chairman of the Liepaja City Council.

The participants also learnt more about Liepaja as the winner of the European Capital of Culture 2027 title, got acquainted with the artistic programme and vision of the “Great Amber” concert hall and also looked at the 17th-19th century interior museum “Madame Hoyer’s Guest House”.

The Ambassadors concluded the regional visit at Ēdole medieval castle.
